EPA assisted the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the potential redevelopment of the historic St. Vibiana’s site with a new cathedral. EPA attended original design charettes with nationally renowned architects, planners, liturgists and historians and provided an evaluation of alternative locations when the Archdiocese sought to relocate the new Cathedral elsewhere. EPA then prepared the Draft EIR for potential demolition of the original cathedral when the Archdiocese considered sale of the property. The EIR comprehensively responded to vigorous administrative challenges from the Los Angeles Conservancy and other preservationist organizations. The cathedral is now being converted to a school for the arts consistent with Secretary of the Interior Standards for the preservation of historic buildings and in keeping with one of the reuse alternatives analyzed in the EIR.
